PAUL VIRILIO : “We moved from the democracy of opinion — the representative democracy of meetings– to the presentative democracy of emotions to the point that this “democracy of instantaneous emotions “ as I call it, the Communism of affects since we are no longer talking about democracy, but a totalitarianism like Communism was. An example: today’s “story-telling” techniques, the optically-correct and narration techniques used to elect Bush but also Sarkozy are impact techniques, but also techniques of collective intellectual power. The person talking, who wants to get elected, speaks to a kind of global intellect where there are only individuals who together for a collective intellectual power. This idea comes from Communism.”
